Immunized against toxoplasmosis

Monday, December 28th, 2009

toxoplasmosisToxoplasmosis, a word that makes women tremble when they learn they are pregnant. Its diagnosis is mandatory in early pregnancy by a simple blood test.

Its purpose, whether or not it has already contracted toxoplasmosis during his life. If this happens, the blood test shows the presence of antibodies against this disease: there is already immune. In contrast, more rarely, a pregnant woman has never been in contact with toxoplasmosis, it is not immune.

No immunity against toxoplasmosis involves controlling each month by taking blood for the presence of antibodies. The goal is not to catch it during pregnancy. And for good reason: if it is benign for the mother, she can be serious for the child, especially if it is contracted during the first quarter.

In addition to these regular checks, the pregnant woman must carefully follow a lot of hygiene to avoid the catch: Wash and peel all fruits and vegetables, do not eat rare meat, wear gloves when gardening and change the litter box the cat, etc..
